Katie and Ella are at a wonderful phase in life, "falling in love" with their friends at school and around the neighborhood. Katie, Ella, and I (Bill) were sitting down for lunch a couple of days ago, and Katie out of the blue pronounced, "Uh Oh, Dada, we have a PROBLEM!".
"What's that, Katie?" I asked.
"Well, if we are moving, how am I going to marry Owen? He and I are falling in love!"
Of course I'm not interested in Katie or Ella being interested in dating much less falling in love and marrying until they are well into their 30's, but the issue had presented itself so I said, "Owen seems like a wonderful boy, Katie. And even when we move you'll be able to send him letters and pictures. I'm sure you'll make new friends at your new school. What is it about Owen that makes him so special?"
Katie was quick with an answer, "Oh Dada, there are SO many things he can teach me..." (Uh-oh!). "He knows how to read and write already, and he told me that girls can marry each other!"
Now what kind of Christian school is this we are paying so much money for I thought! ;-)
Then Ella, having sat patiently through Katie's profession of love for Owen was ready to chime in. Ella said, "Yea, I'm falling in love with my friend Sierra." Well, she must be reading the same books as Owen, I thought! But then Ella followed up with, "but I'm going to marry Quinn".
"Why Quinn?" I asked. "Is he smart like Owen?" At this point I am happy that the girls are showing interest in the smart boys.
"No, not really. I'm much smarter. But he likes to bonk his head on the table like this (she demonstrates to Katie's delight), and it makes me laugh, so I'm going to marry him." Visions of the kid with the bucket on his head in the Steve Martin movie, Parenthood, leap into my head...so much for the smart boys, but at least she'll be laughing...
Ain't love grand? :-)
